If it were not for the mountain range surrounding Farmington NM one might think he's driving down Hwy 90 between Lafayette and New Iberia. Knight Oil Tools, BJ Services, Schlumberger, Baker Hughes and the rest of gang all with offices there. Its clear Farmington is the oil city in that part of New Mexico.
We took off west on Highway 64 to Shiprock NM and the UTE Mountain Indian Reservation. Turning north then back west we arrive at the Four Corners Navajo Tribal Park. At this location four states join to make the four corners.
We departed four corners driving NE into Colorado then turned NW into Utah. Just a beautiful drive down the scenic highways of Utah. Our plan was to take several different routes through the Navajo Indian Reservation that would deliver us past the Valley of the Gods and into Monument Valley Tribal Park. But it seems Highway 261South in Utah has 2.2 miles of unpaved road with 10+ degree slopes on a switch back trail. Being that the bulk of these routes have had VERY little traffic we thought it best to find another route. Since you can not cross Glen Canyon in southern Utah we had to back track 40 miles or so.
WE crossed back into Arizona and competed our drive through Monument Valley. We are staying on the Navajo Reservation tonight in Kayenta Az. We have tons of photos and some video. If i can figure out how to upload them to a sharing site i will post a link.
