Seems as though the highly qualified craftsman who installed our chimney cap left some unsealed holes that allowed water in and here are the results.  

Lots of rot....

While having this repaired we decided to have other issues addressed as well.  This is what our home looks like today.

Added some detail around doors and windows

Had to rebuild chimney
